Habitat Restoration & Trail Maintenance

We love partnering with local organizations, companies, and groups for volunteer parties! Give back by removing invasive species, planting natives, and conducting other habitat restoration or trail maintenance work. If your community organization, church group, scout troop, service club, or company is looking for a fun, active volunteer opportunity, please contact us to learn more about our current project needs.

Also, the San Dieguito River Park rangers host monthly work parties for habitat restoration and trail maintenance projects. Check the River Park’s event calendar for times and locations each month.

Citizen Science Monitoring Program

The Conservancy is recruiting volunteers to help implement the San Dieguito Citizen Science Monitoring Program. Our citizen scientists collect valuable plant and animal data in the River Park – and you can too! Whether you are available one-time only or would like to make a longer-term commitment, there’s lots of ways to get involved. Join us on expert-led surveys, review wildlife camera photos in your home, add your personal observations to our iNaturalist project, or assist with educational events. Check out our Citizen Science page for more information on how to get involved.

Hike Leaders & Hike Assistants

We’re always on the look out for Hike Leaders and Assistants to help with our public hikes in the San Dieguito River Park. Volunteers must be able to hike trails rated easy to strenuous, and be knowledgeable or willing to learn about our local environment, plants and animals. We ask that volunteers commit to helping with at least 2-4 hikes per year.

Apply to be a SDRVC Hike Leader or Hike Assistant here.

Hike Assistants

No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and share.

Hike Leaders

Hike leaders will be required to complete a Trail Guide Training program (such as those offered by the Canyoneers, Mission Trails Regional Park or the Torrey Pines Natural Reserve) and one field-day training session with an experienced Hike Leader in the River Park. Please contact us  to start your journey as a hike volunteer.

Watershed Explorers Educators

Join us as we spread our enthusiasm and knowledge to the next generation of stewards of the outdoors! The Watershed Explorers Program is seeking volunteer Watershed Educators interested in the distinctive nature, history, and culture of the San Dieguito River Watershed stretching 55 miles from Volcan Mountain west to Del Mar. Watershed Educators inspire youth in grades 3 to 5 to value and protect our natural and cultural resources through educational activities and hikes on five different field trips in the San Dieguito Watershed. As a Watershed Educator, you’ll receive training and access to exclusive events. For more information about the Watershed Explorers Program and to sign up to volunteer, click here.

Event Volunteers

We need volunteers throughout the year to help us with various educational and outreach events, including our annual fundraiser, the River Valley Fest. These events are a fun way to give back and support the Conservancy while meeting new people and having a great time. Sign up for Riverscape to learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities. We also post event (and other) volunteer opportunities on VolunteerMatch.
