Coast to Crest Challenge Series

Interested in challenging your physical strength and endurance while exercising in open space? This new series will consist of both hikes and bike rides, led by David O’Connor, San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy Conservation Manager. Details: Meet at 7am at the Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve (East) trailhead pull out off highway 79 East – Hwy 79 Trailhead: Take Hwy 78 into Santa Ysabel. Turn north on to Hwy 79. Trailhead is 1.5 miles north of Santa Ysabel or just south of the Santa Ysabel Mission. Parking is available along Hwy 79. We will then carpool from there to the Farmer’s road trailhead and walk back Please register to participate at david@sdrvc.org.

San Dieguito River Running Club

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy and San Dieguito River Park are leading the efforts to run the valley coast to crest. The self-proclaimed Pronghorns will meet at the designated location and time before heading out with a running map for a self-guided and individually-paced run. Participants must have two cars/carpool option to participate. We will meet at the Santa Fe Trailhead at 6:30 AM sharp to leave car 1 and drive to Sikes Trailhead to park car 2. Once the cars are parked, participants will run around Lake Hodges back to Santa Fe Trailhead. If you have any questions, please contact, David O’Connor, at david@sdrvc.org.

Create art from nature using natural materials found in the San Dieguito River Park. Participants will meet at the San Dieguito River Park Headquarters for a ranger-led interpretive hike on the Highland Valley Trails to collect materials. Once materials are collected, we will return to make art.

The Beetles of San Diego County

A discussion by Robyn Waayers including the following topics:

What ARE beetles? Beetle diversity and abundance. Beneficial, harmful and neutral beetle species. A sampling of our local beetles: the beetle species of the San Diego County mountains and points west, and the San Diego County deserts. Local introduced (non-native) beetles, including the Gold-spotted Oak Borer. Tips on how to observe and study beetles. The future for beetles.

Robyn Waayers is a local community college instructor of biology and has studied beetles as a serious avocation since 2001. She has discovered several beetle species new to California over the past several years, and is a regular contributor to Bugguide.net. This program is designed for children 6-12 of age. Spend time with a Park Ranger for several hands-on activities to better understand and appreciate the local environment.
