San Dieguito Lagoon North Bank Restoration

In 2006, the Conservancy received a $19,350 grant from the Southern California Wetlands Recovery Project to restore native habitat on 1.15 acres of land on the northern side of the river channel in the San Dieguito Lagoon. Partnering with the 22nd District Agricultural Association (DAA), who operate the Del Mar Fairgrounds and own the property where the project is located, the Conservancy rehabilitated an area that was been heavily impacted by decades of dumping and human encroachment.

Several hundred volunteers came out to help remove debris, prepare the site, plant and seed natives, and weed and water to help the new natives become established.  The North Bank project also enhanced a new segment of the River Park’s Coast to Crest Trail, which was constructed with the assistance of the 22nd DAA and Del Mar Rotary, extending from the Lagoon Boardwalk to the freeway.

North Bank Project Being Restored

How Can You Help

There is still work to do!  To make the restoration a success over the long term, volunteers are needed to do spot weeding and water new natives.  If you are interested in helping maintain the North Bank restoration site by adopting a section of the project area for weeding and watering on a flexible schedule, contact the Conservancy at (858) 755-6945 or volunteer@sdrvc.org.
